Fishing in Patagonia
If you are finding the winter long, without much
sunshine, and you are itching to use your fly rods, but they are confined
to their cupboards, this maybe the solution.
The Harrison-Veitch Fishing Company and Ian Scarr Hall of Amhuinesuidhe Castle
are working together to form fishing groups for Fly Fishing in Patagonia.
Patagonia is a country of roughly half the size of western europe, with a
great number of wild rivers and lakes to be fished. The emphasis is on fly
fishing in wild and pristine scenery, and sharing the experience with a small
group of like minded fishermen.
There are 2 main trips
1. Fly fishing for Trout in the Andes (Feb-April)
1420 pounds/rod
2. Fly fishing for Dorado on the Parana River (Feb-April) 1650 pounds/rod
We aim to fill groups of up to 6 rods for 7 day trips. Smaller groups can
be catered for, but the cost will be higher. The price excludes air fares,
although we can organise these for you. On all the trips, expert local guides
are provided, boats, and float tubes are provided when required. All meals
are provided, and camps are set up in the wilderness at lunchtime, to allow
time for a rest, a chat and comparison of catches and techniques.
1. Fly fishing for Trout in the Andes
This is a 7 day program from Monday to Sunday in the cool south of the country.
There are 4 species of trout (rainbow, brown, brook and lake trout) and 2
species of salmon (chinook and landlocked). The fishing is done on small-medium
sized mountain rivers and lakes. There is a great variety of fishing available.
Given this choice the group can express its own preferences or rely on the
guides for the best fishing given the conditions of the moment. The priority
being river fishing. Because of the variety of lakes and rivers available,
the group is free to express its preferences. The guides are there to help
you maximise your chances, and allow you to choose the fishing that suits
you best. The quality of the experience being paramount.
1a) Rivers
Cholila, Rivadavia, Arrayanes, Frey, Grande.
In these rivers the average weight of the trout is between 2 and 4 pounds,
with plenty of bigger ones around. These rivers are characterised as pristine
waters, beautiful landscapes with dramatic forests and mountains.
Two other rivers can be fished, these are the Pico and the Corcovado. The
trout caught here weigh an average of 5-6 pounds with some being caught at
15 pounds. These two rivers are characterised by less trees, more windy conditions,
but still pristine waters.
Float tubes are provided by the team and can be used in all these rivers,
depending upon the state of the river. In some cases boats are provided where
necessary, or of course you can fish from the bank. Both floating and sinking
lines can be used with dry flies and nymphs. On some days, the descent of
a whole river will be done by float tube, and exciting way to see the river,
the forest and be fishing new pools all the time.
Lake Fishing is also available.
1b) Lakes
There are two categories of lakes available to fish, all of them being pristin
waters.
Cholila, Rivadavia, Verde, Menendez, Futalaufquen, and Kruger
The average weight of trout in these lakes is between 3 and 4 pounds, although
10 pound specimens can be caught. The surrounding mountains are heavily forested
and beautiful.
Another group of lakes can be fished, for larger trout and landlocked salmon.
Uno, Tres, Cuatro, Cinco, Vinter
Here the trout are generally larger, the average being between 5 and 6 pounds,
with specimens being taken around 15 pounds. The banks are barer and the winds
somewhat harder on these latter lakes.
On all the lakes, boat and bank fishing are available. Also it is possible
to fish from flaot tubes at the river mouths.
2. Fishing in the Parana River
This enormous river runs through 5 provinces and along 2000 kms, much further
to the north in a more tropical climate. The great length of the river provides
a variety of habitats and species, and therefore a great variety of fishing.
The places that we fish are ITA-IBATE, ITUZAINGO, YAHAPE and BELLA VISTA.
Everyone of them has lots of islands, a leafy vegetation and rich fauna. You
can find monkeys, colorful birds, crocodiles and otters, among many other
species.
The most known fish is the Dorado, named after its irridescent golden scales
; it can grow up to 50 lbs, although those caught with flies tend to be smaller.
The most common sizes for fly-fishing are around 6-10 lbs, but you can expect
a surprise at any time. This fish is famous also for it's fearsome fight:
it takes long runs and jumps out of the water, leaving the flies mangled,
of course leaders must be steel-made. The Dorado is known locally as the tiger
of the river.
There is a special spot for fly fishing Dorados at IBERA TIDELANDS. Is a very
large area covered by lagoons and ponds not too deep (about 2-3 mts), full
of "moving islands" made of aquatic plants and layers of dust brought
by the wind. The whole area is an environment with beautiful and colorful
plants, yacarés (local crocs), screaming monkeys, lagoon deer, and
lots of colourful birds. In the pristine waters here you'll be able to practice
fly-fishing for several species, Dorado being the best known of them.
If you can find a bank of fish you can come up with a catch of 8-10 Dorados/rod
in one day. We've been in a trip that caught 40 small Dorados in 3 hours between
3 rods!, and this was out of season!!
Accomodation here is in ranches, or haciendas. The level of confort is very
high and the service is excellent.
Other trips can be arranged on the Parana river, in search of other species.
The biggest one is the Sorubim a catfish, because of its size and strength
it is called "bull of the river". It can grow up to 120 lbs.
There are other local species, not so well known, but that offer also a determined
fight for the keen angler to enjoy. Trahiras 4-6 lbs, Mandubi 6-8 lbs, Pirá-pitá
8-10 lbs and Chafalotes up to 20 lbs. Some of these species can be caught
on the fly, others require different methods. The cost of these trips depends
upon the degree of comfort with regards to accomodation required by the customer.

Une semaine de
pêche à la mouche en Patagonie
Ce pays fait environ la moitié
de la surface de l'Europe de l'ouest avec beaucoup de rivières dans
un état complètement sauvage. Dans le sud du pays on trouve
des rivières de montagne pleines de truites et dans le nord du pays
où le climat est plutôt tropical, on trouve des espèces
plus exotiques propres à l'Amérique du sud.
Harrison Veitch Fishing crée des petits groupes de six pêcheurs
pour une semaine de pêche à la mouche inoubliable en pleine
période d'hiver en Europe.
Nous vous proposons deux séjours
1 - Pêche de truites dans la cordillère

La taille maximum des groupes est
de six personnes et la durée est de sept jours. Des séjours
pour groupes de moins de six peuvent aussi être organisés,
le prix par personne est alors plus important.
Chaque groupe dispose de guides autochtones, de guides francophones, de
bateaux s'il y en a besoin et de float tubes.
Tous les repas sont inclus dans le prix, y compris les déjeuners,
même en plein milieu de la forêt. Des campements sont installés
pour que tout le monde puisse manger tranquillement et échanger ses
anecdotes de pêche.
1 - Pêche à la Mouche
dans la cordillère des Andes
Il s'agit d'un programme de sept jours dans le sud du pays où il
ne fait jamais trop chaud, même en été. On y trouve
quatre espèces de truites et deux espèces de saumons. Nous
pêchons sur des rivières de petite à moyenne taille
et sur des lacs. Différentes variétés de pêches
sont pratiquées sur ces nombreuses rivières et lacs. Chaque
groupe peut exprimer ses préférences concernant son type de
pêche favori. Les guides sont là pour vous faire profiter au
maximum des possibilités de la région. Nous prenons soin de
la qualité de votre pêche pendant votre séjour en sélectionnant
des rivières ou lacs variés et des guides de qualité
qui vous assurent une semaine de pêche inoubliable.
Rivières
Cholila, Rivadavia, Arrayanes, Frey, Grande sont des rivières où
les truites pèsent de 1 à 2 kg en moyenne mais certaines sont
parfois beaucoup plus grosses. Leurs eaux sont propres et non endommagées
par la civilisation. Entourés de grandes montagnes et forêts
vous pêcherez dans des paysages magnifiques.
Dans les rivières Pico, et Corcovado les truites sont plus grosses
allant de 2,5 kg à 3 kg, jusqu'à 7 kg. Ces deux rivières
se trouvent dans un paysage venté peu arboré.
Les Float tubes sont fournis par l'équipe et peuvent être utilisés
sur toutes les rivières, en fonction du niveau d'eau. Dans certains
cas on pêche depuis des barques et bien sûr depuis les bords.
Vous utiliserez notamment des sèches et des nymphes, les guides sont
là pour vous conseiller à tout moment. Certains jours sont
réservés à la descente de rivière en float tubes.
Excellent moyen d'accéder aux rivières restées à
l'état sauvage, de voir la forêt et de pêcher dans de
nouveaux endroits.
A midi, comme pour tous les déjeuners, un campement est établi
pour le repas et le repos.
Il est aussi possible de pêcher dans les nombreux autres lacs dans
la région.
Les Lacs
nous vous en proposons deux catégories :
- Cholila, Rivadavia, Verde, Menendez, Futalaufquen, et Kruger
Le poids moyen des truites dans ces lacs tourne autour de 2 kg, mais il
est parfois possible de pêcher des truites de 5 kg. Paysage de montagnes
élevées et vastes forêts.
- Une deuxième catégorie de lacs comportant des spécimens
de truites et de saumons de taille plus importante est disponible :
Uno, Tres, Cuatro, Cinco, Vinter
Ici on trouve des truites de taille moyenne autour de 3 kg avec certains
spécimens dans les 7 kg. Paysage plus pelé et, en général,
plus venté.
Dans les deux cas on peut pêcher depuis les barques et les bords,
ou même en float tubes à l'embouchure des rivières.
2 - Pêche dans la rivière Parana
Cette grande rivière parcourt cinq provinces sur
2000 km. Elle se trouve beaucoup plus au nord que les rivières à
truites. Cette longueur permet une grande variété d'habitats
et d'espèces et donc une grande variété de pêche.
Nous pêchons à plusieurs endroits Ita-Ibate, Ituzaingo, Yahape
et Bella vista. Tous ces sites de pêche sont agrémentés
d'îles où la flore et la faune sont riches et variées
: singes, crocodiles, loutres et autres oiseaux multicolores.
Le poisson le plus connu, que nous pêchons par préférence
est le Dorado (d'eau douce), nommé ainsi pour ses écailles
dorées et brillantes. Ce poisson peut atteindre les 25 kg, ceux qui
se pêchent à la mouche font dans les 3 à 5 kg, mais
une grande surprise est toujours possible... Le dorado est surtout connu
pour sa lutte acharnée au cours de laquelle il mène un combat
souvent aérien, laissant les mouches inexploitables. Ses dents sont
tellement affûtées qu'il faut utiliser des bas de lignes en
acier. En Argentine ce poisson est surnommé le "tigre de la
rivière".
Nous avons un endroit privilégié pour pêcher le dorado,
qui s'appelle Ibera. Il s'agit d'une vaste zone couverte d'étangs
"inter lies", qui ne dépassent guère les 3 m. Au
milieu de ces étangs se trouvent des îlots de roseaux flottants.
On y trouve le dorado et d'autres espèces de poissons prenant également
la mouche. En général, on peut prendre 8 à 10 dorados
par jour, mais il est arrivé à trois pêcheurs d'en pêcher
quarante en trois heures.
On loge ici en haciendas où le niveau de confort est très
élevé, tout comme le service.
D'autres possibilités de pêche existent sur la rivière
Parana grâce à sa variété d'espèces de
poissons. Le plus gros étant le sorubim un poisson-chat tâcheté,
qui atteint 60 kg, surnommé le "taureau de la rivière".
D'autres espèces existent, moins grosses certes, mais qui se défendent
bien : trahiras 2 à
3 kg, mandubi 3 à 4 kg, pira-pita 4 à 5 kg, et chafalotes
9 kg. On utilise plusieurs méthodes pour pêcher ces poissons
y compris la pêche à la mouche.
